KG5ZOK’s TS-2000 Repair

John, KG5ZOR, bought a TS-2000 for a great price.  Unfortunately, it had some issues so he brought it into the Shack last week for a checkup.

We hooked it up on the 20m TH7DX and called CQ around 6:00pm.  We received a response from a mobile station and he gave us a 5×3 signal report.  He said we were extremely weak, but since he was mobile AND the band was starting to close, we thought it was just a bad luck QSO.  We called CQ again and bagged a very strong K7.  He gave us a 5×7 with good audio.  OK, so at least the radio was working.

We then hooked up the radio to an internal whip and loaded it on 146.640 MHz.

Interesting that we couldn’t hit the repeater unless we jacked the power output up all the way. A quick audio check with KG5WNN at least verified we were modulating and the radio worked.

For some reason, the power output in each case looked low, but there was no definitive way to tell since the TS-2000 has a relative power meter.

This weekend I got a chance to check it out on my workbench.

The first item to do was to determine why the previous owner brought out a coax line from the back of the unit, terminated with a BNC connector.  After the bottom lid was removed, and some schematic tracing, it was determined that the previous owner wanted a special port to feed an external Receive Antenna.  The previous owner spliced into the onboard line and snaked a line out one of the back vent holes.   It was actually a very lousy job with black liquid rubber coating and exposed sheath and center conductors! I removed this modification and redressed the wiring with heat shrink tubing.

Next step – I then hooked up a dummy load and power meter, here what I measured:

So conceivably, the 2 contacts we made earlier on 20m were made with only 8 Watts on SSB.  Not too bad!The 1W contact on the W5RRR 2m repeater was a reasonable power level to activate the repeater since we were pretty much in line of sight with the Building 1 antenna and our power was similar to a Handheld radio.

After studying the schematic, the block diagrams, and a few searches online, it was clear that this was a unique problem.  After a full day of troubleshooting and signal tracing, I was fairly convinced that the finals and pre-final driver stage were OK.  This was a huge relief because the predriver and final transistors, 2SC1971 and 2SC1972, are unobtainium now and it would have been a challenge to find reasonably priced replacement parts especially because many of these parts are known to be counterfeits (uncontrolled Asia imports).  Whew!  Then I started to look at the low level signals to see if they were properly injecting into the driver stage- and why 80m and 160m had good drive but the other bands were constricted.    By luck, I noticed that the power jumped when I placed the oscilloscope probe on the Drain of the pre-amp MOSFET driver, a 2SK2596.  My first inclination was that the jump was induced by noise being injected by the scope probe.  So, I took an insulated bamboo pick (these are super useful on the workbench), and pressed it against that solder joint.  Voila!  Success! The power jumped up whenever I pressed that solder joint pad on that MOSFET.

After resoldering the 3 leads using my handy micro soldering tool, the power levels on HF and 2M (mostly) jumped back into compliance!  The attached photos of my resoldered pads is actually pretty poor.  I should have applied rosin to the pads prior to resoldering them.  But I was simply happy to get the solder on the pads without shorting them since it was a Surface Mount transistor and they can be pesky.  So it was good enough.

There was still an issue with 2m.  The power improved from 1W to about 40W, but the specs for this radio is 100W.  I was able to trace the lower power level to another board, but after removing a healthy handful of screws to get access to the TX-RX 1 Unit board, I decided this adventure was risking breaking fragile ribbon cables and accidently  shorting out components since deeper troubleshooting would involve powering up boards that needed to be sandwiched below another.  And since this was John’s radio, I didn’t want to risk a deeper dive into the repair.

After I buttoned it back up, a quick check showed a healthy 60W output on 146.640MHz.  More than adequate for a large signal on 2m, and only a miniscule 2dB difference between 60W and 100W.    The riddle of why it wouldn’t output 100W is still a mystery but one has to make pragmatic decisions at times.

This is a fine radio and will bring John many years of enjoyment!

  2. What the heck!?!?! The TS-2000 already has an HF receive port used for when an operator is using a Beverage or another receive-only antenna. I’m trying not to go all Dante on someone….

  3. Actually, this is a fairly common problem in Kenwood radios due to lower than average quality control in their wave-flow soldering. In addition, early TS-2000’s are subject to slow death of crystal filters, due to a design problem allowing DC bias to pass through the filters, slowly destroying them. Kenwood is not alone in this design Foh Pah, Yaesu and Icom also made the same mistake, even though the filter manufacturer datasheets clearly indicate DC blocking capacitors should be inserted on the input and output of the filters.

    The TS-2000 is a fine radio, it actually performs far better than its peer competitors, but it has a huge designed-in weak point, serviceability. With the advent of digital control in amateur radio products, most of the popular transceivers have a built-in set of adjustment tools in their firmware. Not so with the TS-2000. If you ever have to replace a major assembly, you will be forced to perform alignment procedures. This cannot be accomplished with the operational firmware in the radio. A special Adjustment Firmware image must be downloaded to the radio after first uploading the operational firmware to preserve it. This requires a special toolset that is proprietary to Kenwood, used in their authorized service centers, and not available to the public. Kenwood obviously wanted this radio to be a service revenue gold mine.

    True, there are bootleg copies of the adjustment firmware available on the internet, but remember, this radio has been manufactured since 2000, almost 20 years, and over that time period most of the internal circuit boards have undergone several major revisions, some due to design problems, but more importantly, many redesigns of the circuitry were required due to obsolescence of components. For this reason, you cannot be sure that the Adjustment Firmware suite you download from the internet will actually work correctly for your radio.

    I service radios, and as much as I appreciate the TS-2000 as a good performer, I would never own one, and caution anyone who considers it.

  4. You looked at the wrong data sheet. No, the ceramic filters used do not require DC blocking capacitors. My TS-2000 from 2001 still runs perfectly without DC blocking capacitors. The TS-2000 is a very good rig and is very reliable.

  5. You have to change 2SK2596…otherwise, problem will reappear again.
    It’s not bad solder joint, it’s a transistor.
    I repaired many transceivers with this problem, it’s always 2SK2596 defect.
    I am repairing transceivers for a living, you can take my advice seriously 🙂

  6. Hi all
    I have a Kenwood TS-2000 that has a issue.
    When transmitting SSB on HF There is a popping sound in the speaker on the voice peaks.
    The popping gets less as the output power is reduced to under 40 watts or so. Gets much worse as power is increased.
    tried a dummy load in place of the antenna and the problem stays the same. Thought it may be RF getting into the receiver.
    Seems to be gradually getting worse over time.
    Any ideas what may be causing the problem?

  7. Great info folks. Thank you. If anyone has the TX Alignment procedures for the latest MOSFET PA board in the newer TS-2000 please guide me to it. None of the service manuals I’ve been able to find have this. Ted N4YX (good on QRZ)

  8. I have 2 TS-2000X radios from a friend who took a lightning strike to his system. One of them, on initially connecting voltage drew a small, normal amount of current. But when the power switch was pressed the internal relays start cycling on and off, drawing heavy current when on. After reconnecting power the radio does the same thing even before using the power switch. The other radio does the same thing, except that I never had to use the power switch.

    The fact that the power switch did work tells me that the microprocessor probably works. Something is drawing heavy current but the service manuals do not show a breakdown of how the power circuits work, and the schematics and board layouts are very difficult to follow and are not exactly as what I see in the radio.

    Before giving up, or starting to tear things apart to try to isolate the heavy current draw, I wonder if anyone here has any experience with the problem I am facing?

    I have two more TS-200’s of my own that I have had for many years and they are working ok still.

    • Hi Russ-
      I’m looking at the schematic now. If you see heavy current draw, it’s a short somewhere. I’d measure the resistance at the power input line to see if there’s an obvious low resistance path. I see that the power comes directly into the Final Unit module. From there, it branches off into feeding the raw +13.8V to the Final Output Transistors or to a parallel set of low voltage regulators. One option is to remove the F3 10A fuse and see if it’s still drawing heavy current w/o the power switch. If so, you’ve isolated the problem to the +13.8V (B+) path. Taking a lightning strike is a risky repair effort! Good luck

  9. Guys, thanks for this discussion – very interesting. I own a TS2000X and it is a great radio transceiver. I have recently had a small problem develop with it and decided to get the Kenwood original maintenance software which requires two additional parts – a 57 cm lead with minipin plugs (E37-0572-05)
    and 17 cm flat cable (E37-0878-05)
    (Neither seem to be currently available but are easy to mock up) .

    After luckily finding this software (which is dated circa 2000) I ran it and found that it still works on Windows 11. You will also the Service Manual. After running in the software to the transceiver ( which replaces the operating software ) , I reset the TS2000 and it beeped . After consulting the Service Manual I found that this is as intended and proves the you are in maintenance mode. It also allows you to automatically tune the transceiver through front panel keys (the service manual advises that you can also manually tune the transceiver by a different procedure which are both in the 171 page manual).

    After tuning is finished you need to follow the procedure to reinstall the operating firmware.

    Before I did this I contacted Kenwood to determine whether they still offer this service but the confirmed that they did not.

    The latest software for the operating firmware from Kenwood refused to work on Windows 11 so I used an old computer and ran in the latest software (Rev 15) and this worked beautifully.

      I just got a 2000SX (Japan version) from eBAY. Works as expected up tp 23cm except it is only 144-146MHz and 430 to 440MHz. Bit limiting in VK land.
      I have done the resistor mod as described but still no go. I’m wondering if a can change the firmware or do i just sell it into Europe. Any ideas?
