JSCARC members Jeff AB4ME, Kelvin K5KGH, and Dave W5OC host 3 Student Interns for a soldering 101 tutorial and a few minutes on the air.
Shirina, KO6DOS, was already a licensed tech, but never operated on HF. With gentle encouragement from AB4ME, we got her for some fun SSB ragchewing with a ham out in Connececut on 20m SSB.
Leo and Melanie also did a great job on their first on-the-air contacts on SSB, with fairly good band conditions even during sunset out to Illinois and Florida.
Shirina was already an experienced soldering ace, so K5KGH gave her a more advanced electronic car kit to build, while Leo and Marina worked on a basic LED flasher kit for their early experiences with soldering.
Weirdly, Melanie’s kit had a bad transistor but Jeff and Kelvin diagnosed the issue and recovery was a success.
Our next student intern activity will be on Nov1 for a Fox Hunt, and then on Nov 11, an advanced soldering project of an AM/FM radio will be tackled.
Thanks to Gilruth management for our shared use of the Scuba Room (adjacent to our W5RRR shack) where we setup and conduct our soldering and DIY build projects.
