W5RRR and JSCARC recent activity

It’s been another active few weeks for W5RRR and the JSCARC members:

Friday 11/15-16

Sunday 11/17
ARRL Sweepstakes SSB

ARRL November Sweepstakes Phone November 16-18

Tanner W9TWJ and Bekah KD5TDP participated in the ARRL SS contest on Sunday.  The contest was already half over when they started but scored an impressive Total Contacts=466, Total Points=78,288, only missing NT (Canada Northern Territories) for a clean sweep!  Avg QSO/hr rate= 42.

Total Contacts by Band and Mode:

Band    Phone    %
——  ——    —–
 20     225      48
 15     209      45
 10      32       7
 —–   —-      —–
Total  466     100

From Tanner:

I expected (as always) for 20m to be the money band as the station always performs extremely well on the band. Things were just fine on 20m (QSO count wise) but it didn’t seem normal. 15m was hot and we made 3 or 4 good runs on 15. We also picked up several Qs on 10m. Always good to get N1KSC in the log and hear them. Hopefully time doesn’t slip away and we can operate all 24 hours next year. It was a marathon and I was thankful we were in a spirit type of mode and didn’t have to operate another 13 hours.

Monday 11/18
JSC Interns introduction to CW

Kelvin K5KGH gave the Fall 2024 Student Intern Ham Radio students an introduction to Morse Code using Code Practice Oscillators and simple instruction about CW.  This is the final activity for these students as they finish up their tour and head back to school.

Saturday 11/23
POTA Activation @ Bastrop by KG5LJZ

Jayant KG5LJZ planned activation of US-2986 Bastrop on SSB and CW was a huge success.  This was Jayant’s 2nd successful activation by himself.  Good job!

Saturday/Sunday 11/23-24
NASA On The Air (NOTA) Activation

Dan KG5PVP and Dave W5OC fired up W5RRR on Saturday and Sunday to commemorate the 55th anniversary of Apollo 12’s mission.  Jayant KG5LJZ also worked a few QSOs from out of town using our remote radio.  We worked about 200 stations on 20m, 10m, and a few on 15m all on SSB, avoiding CW since there was an active CW WW contest ongoing.  This NASA On The Air (NOTA) event involved Marshall Space Flight Center and the Kennedy Space Flight Center’s stations on the air alongside us. As always, it was heartfelt to work those that shared fond recollections of the Apollo program and/or those in their families who served a role in our space program.
