Kurt Rowland K6URT (founder and trustee of the UH Ham Club KI5UCW) sponsored a group of about 20 students from University of Houston for a visit to the W5RRR shack.
Jerry N5FWB and David KG5URA both co-hosted the group consisting of UH Amateur Radio Club (UHARC) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) student members.
From David KG5URA:
We hosted about twenty students from UH main campus. Only about three were licensed with one receiving his license today. Lots of enthusiasm and Jerry captivated them with stories of amateur radio. He managed to contact a guy on 10m up in the northwest. I think it might have been Montana but he will clarify. The guy was gracious enough to allow many of the students to get on the air and chat with him. Amazingly he was running the same Flex radio we have in the shack! Incredible! Signals were solid 5 x 9 both ways. We finally wrapped it up around 7:30. Many of them had to drive to Katy! Enjoyable evening building them up to get licensed and get on the air.
