On Saturday, May 12th, members gathered at Gilruth to take part in JSCARC’s first fox hunt during CQ WW Foxhunting Weekend.
Our T-Hunt chairman, John Maca (AB5SS), designed three foxes and a bonus fox to find. John provided a demo during our monthly meeting on Thursday (5/10) and again right before the action started around 11am on Saturday. Hunters gathered under the pavilion right by the shack to receive their instructions and by 11:15 hunters were on the hunt.
By my count, 12 hunters (including myself) spread out looking for the 3 foxes. This was a great introduction to fox hunting and the tips provided certainly helped all participants track down the foxes.
A more advanced fox (as a bonus) was also hidden within the boundaries. Although this fox was on a different frequency, this fox was using CW modulation, was only using 0.5 mW, and was hidden very well. Several hunters were hot on the trail; however, only one was able to pin this fox down – nice work David Fanelli (KB5PGY)!
Plans are already underway for the next hunt! Be on the look out and keep those skills sharp – an entry level and more advance hunt are being considered on the same day.
Special thanks to Mr. Maca for putting the time in to build the foxes and fox finding gear to demo. Also, thanks to Dave Lee (W5OC) for helping organize and supporting this event.
